Toshiba NB505 Netbook (ep.9)

Exactly what I needed, Just what I expected

I wanted to get a netbook for a while – I use computers at home and at work, and I wanted something for the budget-friendly and independent blogging on the go. I wanted a real keyboard, not virtual, and I cared more about battery life and reliability applications, and customization. After much research, I decided to get this Toshiba.
I had it for three weeks and that’s all I expected and wanted. I’m typing on now! It is small, it is light, it is relatively durable (I have a two year old and he survived it, he knocks on the table, tripping over the cord, trying to adjust the angle of screen and touch it with his sticky fingers). It does not heat, can not sit on my lap for hours. The screen is easy to see at all levels of light. The keyboard is slightly smaller than normal, but I found it easy to get used to it and now can hit it as fast as I can on a regular sized keyboard.
I only use it for surfing and writing in Word. I downloaded Firefox because I use it on my other computer (it comes with Chrome and IE installed). Other than that, the only thing I have on my netbook is that I wrote some articles and some pictures for these articles. I deleted a lot of bloatware Toshiba and am not technophiles – very easy to do.
I have nothing to add and I work on Windows Starter. The only difference between Word and Word Starter is you have to deal with a sidebar that has ads and stuff on it. If you can not ignore that there is no real need to upgrade.
I do occasionally use this netbook for watching movies, the screen looks great, but the audio is a bit poor. For under $5 that I found some external speakers that travel at Amazon plug in and take care of this issue, no problem.
It’s fast, it’s light, it is reliable. The packaging is easy to clean and keep looking new. The cord is super long so it is easy to keep it plugged in and watch movies in bed or use a long distance from the sheet. I can not think of any complaints. This is not a laptop is a netbook. If you do not expect to do everything your PC can do, you’ll be happy.

Toshiba NB505 Netbook (ep.8)

Basically, as the series 305 with port locations swapped.

This unit is very similar to the NB305 series with the card reader slot shared with audio inputs, moving the drive to the front (under the touchpad) and vice versa. Some people may be interested to know … The SD card slot contains the type of card flush with the front edge of the computer, but do not use the type of mechanism that I am used to. Some types of push the card into a spring and a lock. The latter, simply pushes up without lock and without click. You somehow search the map when you want, but if you leave a card docked there, as I do, it’s not a problem and it did not stick dangerously on the side of the machine when you ‘re putting it in one case. In addition, they save the cost and complexity of a spring.
I would give the screen and keyboard 5. Battery weight is a 5, but due to design problems with the mouse pad and the poor audio, it gets a 3 together.
It is difficult to consider it hung for only 1 GB of RAM, when it seems the norm. I wish they would just increase the price of netbooks to $ 10, throw in 2 GB and stop messing around. Like everyone else, I immediately upgraded RAM and had to trash an otherwise good board RAM.
Although I should not compare the two models. The NB305-310 is a joy, the NB505, not as much. NB505 sound is wimpy, one tiny speaker on the bottom of the device, essentially requiring even the cheapest of external speakers for acceptable (and audible) sound. This is one of the great falls with the slew of new netbooks in general. Stereo is worth the extra $ 30, U decide.
This unit also uses the processor N455 instead of N450, grayscale performance, as far as I can tell (I have both systems). Also the battery life dropped from 11 hours (NB305) at 9.5 hours (NB505), according to their specifications. I’m not sure if this is another 6-cell battery, according to an Atom 455 or Win 7. I guess people complained about the battery life is too long. This is a step forward for Microsoft and Intel, and a setback for humanity.
I like the full-size keyboard and mouse and arrow keys alone. I also prefer the separate mic / speaker ports for simple PC port.
The touchpad has flaws. The edges are not well defined, and in low light, you can find the edge of the pad without realizing it, with the exception of obvious lack of response. The buttons on my NB505 touchpad sometimes seem to fall, even when it is pressed (it could just be me), IMO, they could have been better designed. The synaptics driver is much better than XP driver Win7, IMO.
The rubberized coating on the outside of the case is great. In addition to adding a touch of color, it is very functional to improve your grip when carrying it like a book.
And in case anyone even mention the fact that the hi-resolution is not supported, it is! (VGA cable only, no HDMI). You just have to connect an external display, such as the Aquos TV to see hi-res to your heart’s content. The integrated panel is clear with rich colors, but it also leads to an external monitor just fine.
To adjust your display driver for optimal resolution external display, you must feed the video monitor. If you clone the screens, you will only receive standard 1280×600 resolution and be disappointed (see my comments for the display capabilities).
The only game I was charged with torches … it’s a bit painful on the integrated display, but it works. Torchlight run on an external display is excellent.
If you do not get a lemon (lemons are quite rare) is a solid machine. If you get a bad, then for the love of God, run fast and return or exchange it as soon as you can, because I’ve heard terrible things about the support of Toshiba hdwe problem. That said, this is my third Toshiba, Compaq and mixed together and Sony buys I have not got a lemon in any brand.

Toshiba NB505 Netbook (ep.6)

Solid Netbook – Excellent second computer

I bought this computer a few weeks ago and so far my experience has been very positive. This netbook is solidly built and is ready to use out of the box. The keyboard is easy to use and the trackpad is OK – a little too sensitive for my taste. Unlike many other systems, it does not come with much bloatware – trial versions of programs you do not want anyway. There are some, but almost all programs may be useful. Software included Toshiba seems well designed, although personally I do not need it.
As for speed, the computer is powerful enough for a netbook, and run office applications and home net smoothly. Of course, it does not respond to more intensive use, such as video editing, image processing or games – but again, that’s not what this computer is for. However, the Atom processor of this unit is endangered, and about $100 more you can get a netbook that is significantly faster. Nevertheless, or a solid, cheap, ultraportable computer is a good choice.
Pros:
* Good keyboard
* Good battery life
* Nice, slim design
* No bloatware, useful software included
* Solid build quality, looks like it will last
Cons:
* Disappointing sound (one speaker on the bottom)
* Slow CPU

Toshiba NB505 Netbook (ep.5)

Good netbook with full keyboard

Great little netbook at an affordable price. Specs are pretty standard for a netbook 2010/2011: 1G RAM, 250GB HD, 3 USB ports, a video camera base, separate Mic & headphone jacks, SD card slot, VGA output and a very useful self-8am.
There are many such netbooks on the market, but what really stands out for me on this one is the keyboard, the keys FULL size with all the main cursor movement keys: DEDICATED up, down, right, left , PgUp, PgDn, HOME and END. I work a lot with Excel spreadsheets and it is really uncomfortable to move by pressing Fn + end / ORF to the end + / down or ctrl + fn + home, ctrl + fn + end, etc to get around. Also scrolling with PgUp / PgDown while reading a web page is the duration of pain when you have to press the fn key too! With most netbooks you have to live with the Fn key, and not in this case, the NB505 keyboard is really convenient and comfortable, almost like a full laptop or PC keyboard, even to the position of the keys is not standard, they allow you to make the job easier and faster.
I also love the feeling of the event: as some very soft rubber cover is very nice and handles nice!
Windows 7 Starter is really basic, but you can find programs, public services and advice on the Internet to take care of the base “missing features” such as changing the background image, colors, sounds, resize images, and so I got rid of most of the Toshiba Utilities and Norton, and installed MS Security and my favorite freeware utilities Home Edition.
I wish I had stereo speakers, but the netbook includes only a mono speaker in the unit.
I no longer have the Toshiba laptop with an excellent experience, in fact, they are still working (WIN98, 450MB HD, 64MB RAM)! So I decided to take the risk and bought the netbook from Amazon. It arrived quickly, and working OK! (No DOA).
Its been a month since I had the netbook and I’m always happy, but I think I’ll put the memory to 2 GB, to do smoothly, I think Win7 heavier than Win XP 1 GB of RAM (but it’s just my opinion …).
Overall, I recommend it to my friends!

Toshiba NB305 Netbook (ep.6)

So far, this has been a great investment and I love it, so far …

I was a little disappointed at first, I read the review had praised is faster and better this version of the Atom processor was. The machine seemed to freeze if I tried to run more than 3 things at once, so I maxed the RAM to 2gig. After that still does not seem to fix things I did some online surveys on the Windows 7 Starter that was pre-installed, it is designed to make netbooks seem less attractive, you can only have three things on your office at a time. I updated professional and it was like night and day. With the improvements of this netbook is very capable, much faster than the NB205. The battery lasts forever, until now no less than seven hours, no matter what I do with it. He has great speed for what I do, Hulu and Netflix big races, the WIFI is much better than the NB205 I had been using. There’s even a great conversation starter, it looks good.
One of the main reasons I chose the Toshiba was that my girlfriend bought a NB205 with XP on it in February of last year. A pretty good machine, a little too slow to run Hulu or Netflix, but all that we ran on it seemed to be OK. I really liked the portability, long battery life, the ability to take pictures off our camera anywhere, edit and send them to friends as soon as we took them, he came with us everywhere, it was great. So we have come to depend on having around. But recently (the last week or so) there have been some major problems arise with the NB205 that make me very nervous about my new (now 3 weeks old) NB305.
The NB205 has become very reluctant to turn, and it is apparently a common problem with the NB200 series, [Forums Toshiba ]([...]), and watching the discussion forum on its own website, it is a question that Toshiba has no interest at all in the fight. Let us listen to standing behind your product and exceptional customer service, yeah, not so much.
So now here I wonder when my computer pretty new, only when it is running well and I am in love with it, will turn into a paperweight $ 350. It runs great now, but I do not have the protection three years when I bought it, bad move on my part. With the new problem in my girlfriends NB205 I highly recommend that anyone who decides to get this machine to obtain protection, and save to your hard drive often. At least this way you can repair or replace after the factory warranty runs, and you always have access to your data.
So, back to basics, this computer is very fast for a netbook, it has a size of hard drive pretty respectable, the WIFI reception killer, and this model has 2 speakers OK-ish instead of the only forum of shit in the old NB200 series. Toshiba has changed the shape of the battery of the NB200 making him sit a little higher. He gets more air the fan before, but I still have a size Chillmat netbook for her and she is very cool. I love the look and feel of the case of anodized aluminum on the old new (baby pink) plastic on my girlfriends NB205.
I’m really in love with this little computer. I just wish I was still blind to the possibility for her to just stop wanting to ignite one day down the road, however, so I can enjoy it more.
I still recommend this machine with the caveat that you need to cover you with the extended protection of the Amazon. Because the Toshiba looks of things will leave you hanging if there is a problem.

Toshiba NB305 Netbook (ep.5)

Do not need my laptop anymore!

After two weeks of testing of this machine, I am ready to walk away from-laptops.
This is our second NB305. We have the NB305-N442. The N600 is a dual-core Atom processor while the N442 is single core. The top of the case is brushed aluminum, plastic against the N442 is. These are the only two physical differences I see.
We exchanged the disk drive standard for a Zalman solid N128 (“SSD”). Installed Windows 7 Professional (you only need 32-bit version for this machine only supports 2 GB of memory). Most load the drivers with the Win 7 installation, but you’ll need a few where you can download from the support website Tosh. Although this route is more work, get rid of the bloat-ware that is preinstalled on the disk it comes with. We have had many laptops Tosh bloatware since 1995 and continues to worsen. In our experience, it slows the machine down. Swapping the hard ships and do a clean install on an SSD gives you speed gains in the OS and loading of large programs you install.
In this configuration, the load time is fast OS, especially out of hibernation. If you use your laptop for word processing, VPN, remote office or e-mail, you will love this machine. Using the above configuration with Office 2010, Word or Outlook gets loaded in about 5 seconds! I used my PowerPoint out of it to make presentations without a hitch.
I travel a lot and this is where the machine shines. At the airport it is easy to get out of a bag, it weighs less than three pounds. On the plane, I did not have to worry about my screen is stuck when the seat in front of me tilts. It is lightweight and powerful, but the battery life is exceptional. Based on the parameters of your output, you can stretch it to more than 8 hours (make sure to turn off the WiFi!). Thus a flight from coast to coast is not a problem. I have not run out of power on a flight with either the N442 or the model.
I also carry an extra battery just in case. The machine will charge your mobile phone with one of its USB ports and have the extra battery can be a life saver when your flight is delayed and sockets are rare.
Some noted that the SSD extends the battery life. I can not say since I have not run it without an SSD.
The performance of this machine, coupled with its low weight and battery power really make a laptop replacement for me.
Disadvantages? Netbooks are not on video playback, and although this machine is much better than the N442 is the video is not as robust as a multimedia notebook. That goes for the sound too. The speakers are very low. You can work around this problem by using a USB external speaker as the orbit Altec iML227. However, if you use the machine as I am, playing video and high fidelity sound is not of concern.
